epub People of the Three Fires

Book description

This book, although written in 1986 so a lot has continued to happen since, provides a great historical perspective on these three Michigan tribes, that is essentially completely ignored in any traditional history class in the American education system. It was also reviewed and approved of by the tribes themselves so it is not well intentioned yet inaccurate and occasionally insulting like some of the Dear America books on Native Peoples.I really liked how the Ojibway section spent a lot of time on their belief system and traditional way of life. The others seemed to focus more on society and kinship which is also interesting, but I really liked the link between spirituality and daily as it was explained.I also felt the section on legal conflicts in the Ojibway section from people who are upset about them getting special privileges (and by that I mean rights granted them in legal treaties that have not been upheld until recently). It's pretty amazing how people can forget that last 300 years and to an extent the present.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about these remarkable people from a source that hasn't attempted physical and cultural genocide in the name of self-greed to them and other North American tribes.
