Too many books that claim to be authoritative on punk, especially those dissecting the visual appeal, far more often than not tend to look no deeper than the most commercial or mainstream bands and leave the more underground & unsaturated bands uncovered. Not so in this case. The book showcases a wealth of underground bands from across the wide spectrum.
One of the aspects I like most about the book is that it doesn't just content itself with the purely visual analysis,as so many books could and do, this book provides a healthy education on a large number of bands for the reader to look up and listen to, most of which are true underground gems. It's that approach that should make even the most casual or uninformed reader appreciate that as iconic as it is, the artwork is more an extension of the music and lyricism, not a separate entity. In other words it teaches that to understand the artwork, you must understand the music it was made for.
Even those who listen to relatively underground punk or hardcore should find at least half a dozen to a dozen bands for them to track down and enjoy.
The only disappointments for me personally was a lack of any mention of crust punk or powerviolence, two equally expansive and very in keeping with the punk ethos, but that could have probably made the book half as long again.
Overall though it's a very worthwhile read for anyone into punk, hardcore or looking to get into the genre as much as anyone looking at it from an design POV.
